At Melbourne Central Basketball Association, the safety, wellbeing and empowerment of children and young people are our highest priorities. We are committed to providing a child safe environment where all children feel valued, respected, supported and protected from harm.
We have a zero-tolerance approach to child abuse and are committed to promoting and maintaining a culture that safeguards children and young people. We recognise our responsibility to create an environment where children can participate in sport and community activities safely, confidently and free from discrimination, harassment, bullying or abuse.
We are committed to upholding the Victorian Child Safe Standards and relevant safeguarding policies and procedures. We actively work to ensure that all staff, volunteers, coaches, officials and members understand their role in protecting children and promoting their wellbeing.
We celebrate diversity and are committed to fostering an inclusive environment for all children, young people and families. We recognise, respect and value the cultures, identities and contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and are committed to creating culturally safe and welcoming environments for First Nations children and families.
We also affirm the rights of children and young people of all genders, sexual orientations and identities. We are committed to ensuring that LGBTIQA+ children, young people and families feel welcomed, respected, included and safe within our organisation.
Our commitment extends to creating an environment that is inclusive and accessible for children from diverse cultural, linguistic and religious backgrounds, children with disability, and children who may be vulnerable or at greater risk of discrimination or harm.
We encourage children, young people and their families to have a voice, raise concerns and participate in decisions that affect them. All concerns and allegations relating to child safety are taken seriously and responded to promptly and appropriately.
Together, we are committed to creating a safe, inclusive and positive environment where every child can participate, develop and thrive.

The recently implemented Victorian Child Safety Standards extend to sporting organisations operating in Victoria and providing services to children. These standards encompass various requirements that sports organisations must adhere to.
Basketball Victoria offers a range of resources to aid our community in fostering a child-safe environment, accessible HERE.
These standards pertain to child protection within our club, requiring the establishment of guidelines, procedures, and policies. We are dedicated to fulfilling these standards, fostering a culture and environment that prioritise the safety and support of children.
It’s important to note that the standards apply to the organisation as a whole, encompassing not only departments directly working with children but also:
– Board of Management
– All paid staff
– All volunteers (coaches, officials, administrators, scorers, etc.)
– All students on placement
– Any engaged contractors
