MELBOURNE TIGERS BASKETBALL CLUB EST. 1931

Our History

The Tigers history and brand is the most recognisable in Australian Basketball and arguably Australian sport, having been part of the sporting landscape for close to 100 years.

As the oldest basketball association in Australia, dating to the period prior to the formation of the Victorian Basketball Association in 1931. With strong junior and senior representation conducted across Melbourne, the Tigers hold firm to the key objective of providing elite participation at the highest level.

Having competed in the National Basketball League (NBL) from 1984-2014, the Melbourne Tigers set the standard for elite basketball in Victoria winning 4 NBL championships (1993, 1997, 2006, 2008), 10 NBL MVPs in Andrew Gaze (7), Mark Bradtke (1), Chris Anstey (2) and 4 NBL Coach of the Year’s by Lindsay Gaze (3) and Al Westover (1) among other accomplishments. The success of the club was staple in building a passionate fanbase that still supports the club despite no longer competing in the National Basketball League due to the Melbourne United rebrand in 2014. The Melbourne Tigers also sported a Women’s team in the WNBL from 1989-2001 with back-to-back Grand Final appearances in 1994-1995 leading a legacy of Women’s basketball at the highest level.

The Melbourne Tigers Seniors now compete in the NBL1 competition under the NBL1 South division since the formation of the league in 2019. As part of the development from the Junior to Senior programs, the Melbourne Tigers have a Men’s and a Women’s Youth League Championship division teams in the Big V competition for athletes 23 and under.

The Melbourne Tigers Juniors fields over 50 teams from U12 to U21 in the VJBL competition each year, classed as one of the most successful junior Representative programs in Victoria with consistent appearances in the National Classic and National Championships. Victorian State representative teams also field Melbourne Tigers Juniors each year, a testament to the dedicated and experienced coaches that are the backbone of our program.
