Our History

As the oldest basketball association in Australia, dating to the period prior to the formation of the Victorian Basketball Association in 1931, the Tigers have always aspired to and participated in the highest level of competition available. With strong junior representation and adult domestic programs conducted across Melbourne, the Tigers hold firm to the key objective of providing elite participation at the highest level.

The Tigers history and brand is the most recognisable in Australian Basketball and arguably Australian sport, having been part of the sporting landscape for close to 86 years.

The Melbourne Tigers fields Junior and Senior teams in elite competition providing a pathway for elite players to progress from the junior level into the senior ranks at the national level.

Junior Girls – The Tigers fields 21 teams for junior girls from U12 to U21 in the VJBL competition. The Junior Girls program is one of the most successful junior Representative programs in Victoria with consistent appearances the National Classic and U14 National Championships each year. The Club is proud of its dedicated and credentialled and experienced coaches.

The VJBL competition is played on Friday evenings from November to September each year. Seniors – The senior program fields a Men’s and a Women’s team in the NBL1 competition as well as a Men’s and a Women’s Youth Championship division of the Big V competition.
